Freddy Fund and free BP Screen for Taxi Drivers

Clinica Esperanza has started a “Freddy Fund” to support the fees patients are often required to pay for lab tests, when they do not qualify for free care at the local hospitals. Donations to this fund will be matched up to $5000 for the month of January.

In addition, in honor of our patient Freddy M., who recently passed away due to complications of high blood pressure, clinic staff and volunteers have set up a special clinic for free blood pressure screening for taxi cab drivers, on January 12th, 2011. Screening hours are from 5 to 7, first to come will be the first served. The medical director and bilingual community outreach workers will be present to provide an initial screening and will admit those patients to the clinic that have high blood pressures and are in need of care.

Big Yellow Clinic Welcomes Friends and Supporters on Nov 17

News Flash!

It’s big, it’s yellow, and it is open! The permanent site to Clinica Esperanza is now open. This is the moment we’ve been working so hard to achieve. Come see us at Suite 104, 60 Valley Street. We miss our beautiful flower curtains but the new space is very bright and happy.

From the very beginning of this endeavor in July 2007, to this wonderful event, we have been supported by so many wonderful people – volunteers, providers, donors, funders, builders, painters, and more. We are very very thankful to have finally arrived at “a place to be healthy”.

A “potluck” Thanks-gathering is scheduled for Weds. Nov 17th at 7 PM. Bring a dish and come celebrate!

August 21 – First Open House at 60 Valley Street

Hey everyone,

We had our first open house at 60 Valley Street today! For pictures, here’s the website link: http://gallery.me.com/anniedg#100459

What we did  - we planned, we prepared, we opened our doors to anyone and everyone who needed health care screening, today August 21, 2010, from 8 AM to 1 pM at 60 Valley Street. We had glucose checks, cholesterol checks, ask the doc, and BMI measurements.

Who we saw  - we saw grandmothers. We saw daughters. We saw out of work construction workers. We saw hardworking citizens of Rhode Island who could not afford the copay for insurance at their job. We saw painters. We saw nutritionists, and accountants who were laid off, and had no further health care.  We did blood sugars, cholesterols, BMI’s, and booked them in to see us if they didn’t have health insurance.

It was a wonderful team effort – everyone at their post, able to see one patient every 10 or so minutes . . .

What we learned – that we have lots of willing volunteers. We’re definitely ready to see patents and run health fairs. We have a great group of volunteers. The clinic looked wonderful (take a look at the pictures http://gallery.me.com/anniedg#100459), everything was beautifully organized, everyone knew their job.

Thank you volunteers – all of you!

And if you’re ready to volunteer, at the clinic, we have Tuesday and Thursday nights open. Let Rachel know:RachelS@aplacetobehealthy.org.

See you soon at the clinic!

Thanks Everyone!

Annie

Non-volunteer staff

Nurse Coordinator Maria Mendez R.N. Maria joined CEHC in July, 2010, right after graduating from U.R.I. School of Nursing. We’re so thrilled to have her and she says “this is exactly the kind of job I was looking for after nursing school”. She’s learning on the job but seems to love the challenge! Thanks for joining our team Maria!

Consultant R.N. Our former coordinator Gloria Rose, has been an amazing help getting us up and runnig. She is a huge help and we really appreciate the few hours here and there that she can spare to help Maria out. Her wealth of knowledge about health care in RI is a great asset. Thanks for haning in, Gloria!.
